MOLAA FAQS

Does MOLAA accept proposals from artists who are interested in showing their work at the museum?

Yes. Please submit a letter of interest, CV/bio and a selection of 20 images (maximum) to:

Museum of Latin American Art
Attn: Curatorial Department/Proposals
628 Alamitos Ave.
Long Beach, CA 90802

or by email to: curatorial@molaa.org

The information will be reviewed by a Committee and you will receive a response as soon as the review is complete. This review process may take up to 9 months to complete. Please include a self-addressed stamped envelope if you would like your materials returned.

Before submitting artist proposals, we hope that you visit MOLAA and/or its website to consider whether your work is appropriate for inclusion in our program. MOLAA is the only museum in the United States exclusively dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American art; therefore we do not accept proposals that do not fit this profile, such as craftworks, pottery/ceramics, etc.

Please be advised that MOLAA’s exhibition calendar is scheduled far in advance (two to three years ahead) and is mainly based on curatorial projects.

Are images and research materials of the Permanent Collection available to the public?

Any information requests must be directed to the Curatorial Department or Registrar. Please specify the information you need and purpose of your request. Requests for the use of images of the Permanent Collection are for educational purposes only. Permissions may vary by artwork. Please direct all image requests (including purpose and deadline) to the Registrar.

Please submit by email only to: registrar@molaa.org

Does the museum accept Donations or Purchase art for its Permanent Collection?

Yes. You may propose a donation or museum purchase by sending all artwork information and at least one image of the work to:

Museum of Latin American Art
Attn: Collection Department/Donations
628 Alamitos Ave.
Long Beach, CA 90802

or by email to: collection@molaa.org (Emily)

When submitting information, please be sure to specify if it is a proposed donation or museum purchase and include your contact information so that we may respond back to you. The information will be reviewed by the Curatorial Department and if the work is considered of interest to the museum, it will be proposed to MOLAA’s Acquisitions and Collections Committee. The Acquisitions and Collections Committee meets quarterly to review all proposed donations and museum purchases.

Before proposing a donation or museum purchase, we hope that you visit MOLAA and/or its website to consider whether the work is appropriate for inclusion in our Permanent Collection. MOLAA is the only museum in the United States exclusively dedicated to modern and contemporary Latin American art. MOLAA’s Permanent Collection focuses on curatorially driven acquisitions that are meaningful to the exhibition programs, or temporary and travelling exhibitions organized by the Museum and other institutions; as well as ones which include the key protagonists of seminal art movements and art figures in Latin America in the twentieth century. Therefore, we do not accept donations or purchases that do not meet these criteria, such as craftworks, folk art, archaeological objects or artwork belonging to a time period prior to the 20th century.

May I contact the Museum to show images with the purpose of identifying the artist’s name/work?

You may consult MOLAA’s website for the listing of artists in our collection but we do not offer this service. You must contact a certified appraiser or auction house for this information.

Does the museum appraise art?

No. The museum does not give appraisal values or endorse a specific service. You must contact a certified appraiser or auction house for this information. You may contact collection@molaa.org to obtain a list of appraisers.

Does the curatorial department accept internship applications?

Yes. Please submit a letter of interest and résumé to:

Museum of Latin American Art
Attn: Curatorial Department/Internships
628 Alamitos Ave.
Long Beach, CA 90802

or by email to: curatorial@molaa.org

The curatorial department offers non-paid internships to students (preferably art history majors) who are interested in assisting the curators on specific exhibition projects and daily administrative/clerical duties. Interns are required to commit to a minimum of six months and 8 hours per week.

We will review your information and contact you for an interview. Please be advised that this review process maybe take up to 6 months to complete.
