FERNANDO DE LEÓN
(Mexico)

Fernando de León is a printmaker and founder of the collaborative workshops Espacio 1104 (2015 – 2018) and resident artist at Negro Mate Taller (Est. 2018) in Chihuahua, Mexico. De León uses satire and verbal puns in works that juxtapose cultural and national symbols from Mexico and the United States. In the serigraph In Mex We Trust, the viewer perceives the face of U.S. icon of liberation, President Abraham Lincoln. Upon closer inspection, however, the viewer begins noticing Mexican components such as the eagle and serpent as well as the features of Miguel Hidalgo, a leader of the Mexican war for independence from Spain. In synthesizing these elements, De León questions the political and cultural dominance of the United States while exposing the underlying economic and historical connections between these two North American countries.
