Judy Baca, ever the innovator, can’t be confined within the walls of a single medium. But walls are where Baca’s work is best seen. Join us to learn about El Taller Siqueiros, the great Mexican muralist himself and how his work influenced Judy Baca’s murals today. This program will be held via Zoom Webinar format. In this talk, Dr. Fredy González (University of Illinois at Chicago) will give a brief history of Chinese immigration to Mexico during the twentieth century and illustrate some of the ways the Chinese contributed to and claimed belonging to the Mexican nation.

Together we will focus on a series or specific artwork which requires a close inspection, a deliberate process of contemplation, and exploration; delving into the ideas surrounding the creation of the works, their sources of research and inspiration, in an effort to immerse ourselves in the world of the artists.

From Spanish colonial missions to WWII concentration camps to present day ICE run “family detention centers,” the history of the U.S. is marked by mass incarceration due to racism and xenophobia. In 1942, Crystal City detention facility opened in south Texas as one of the many sites around the U.S. used to incarcerate those of Japanese ancestry during WWII. Unique to Crystal City, many of these internees had been deported from Latin America to the U.S. This panel of Japanese American and Latinx artists and experts will speak not only to these communities' connected histories of violence and displacement, but also to the interwoven stories of resistance and community power that were built out of these times of pressure.

Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, is a microcosm of a planet in flux. Eating Up Easter explores the challenges faced by the Rapa Nui people, and the intergenerational fight to preserve their culture and a beloved environment against a backdrop of a modernizing society and a booming tourism trade. A Q & A with native filmmaker Sergio Rapu will follow the screening. Presented in partnership with Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (PIEAM)

Celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander Latinx Festival at MOLAA as we explore the instances of cultural synthesis between Asian, Pacific Islander & Latinx Communities in the US and throughout Latin America. We examine these narratives throughout the month of May in partnership with the Japanese American National Museum (JANM) and the Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (PIEAM).

In this panel discussion, we bring together 5 accomplished Latina and Latin American artists featured in the HERland exhibition, with distinct styles and approaches to their art-making processes, but united in making powerful work connected to a surrealist imaginary and defined a new powerful land with new meanings.

Gabriela Urtiaga, MOLAA Chief Curator, will join multi-disciplinary artist Patrick Martinez in his studio. We will get a close look at his work, which explores the socio-economic detritus and objects of working-class urban and suburban Los Angeles as sites of personal, civic, and cultural loss. Patrick will take us through his studio to show us his works in progress, his process of creation, and the influences present in his work.

Join us for a virtual tour of MOLAA’s exhibition Arte, Mujer y Memoria: Arpilleras from Chile. Arpilleras are palpable testimonies to the lived experiences of Chilean women during the Pinochet dictatorship. Gabriela Martínez will host a conversation on the exhibition with Dr. Alicia Del Campo (CSULB) and Marisol Quintana of MEMCH-Los Angeles (Pro-Emancipation Movement of Chilean Women). They’ll discuss the context of these colorful handmade textiles and the origins of the process, as well as their political impact and visual legacy.
