Collection Highlights - Activity Guide
For over 100 years, MOLAA has been a center of creativity, entertainment, art, and innovation. On this location in the early 1900s, Balboa Studios became the cradle of the West Coast silent film industry. In the following decades, these grounds housed a popular roller-skating rink known as The Hippodrome. Today, this site is home to the only museum in the country dedicated exclusively to Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art.
This exhibition presents highlights from the evolution of founder Robert Gumbiner’s (1923–2009) collection and the integration of new acquisitions over the past two decades. Drawn from over 1,600 works of art from over 20 countries, this exhibition also celebrates emergent collections of new media, and art from more reaches of the Latino diaspora including U.S. Latino and Chicano art.
