Sebastián Calfuqueo

(Chile, 1991)

Calfuqueo is of Mapuche origin, and their work reflects on their cultural inheritance as Mapuche in order to propose a critical reflection on the social, cultural and political status of the indigenous subject in the contemporary Chilean society and Latin America at large. Their work includes installation, ceramics, performance and video art that are used in tandem, and separately, to explore the cultural similarities and differences, as well as the stereotypes produced from the intersection between indigenous and western patterns of thinking. Their work also seeks to present the societal problems facing feminism and the LGBTQ movements.

Their work has been exhibited in Chile, Perú, Brasil, México, Estados Unidos, Alemania, España, Reino Unido, Suecia, Suiza y Australia. Recent exhibitions include solo presentations at Parque Cultural de Valparaíso y el MAC -Museo de Arte Contemporáneo - de la Universidad de Chile, Quinta Normal, in Santiago de Chile. They were awarded with the Municipalidad de Santiago award on 2017 and Premio Fundación FAVA on 2018.
