Dario Escobar (Guatemala, b. 1971)
Dario Escobar was born in Guatemala in 1971. He initially studied engineering for two years before switching to architecture and then to art during his post secondary studies. Since 1992, he has been a professor of art at Rafael Landivar University, teaching free classes that are open to the general public every Saturday.
Escobar’s works commonly deal with the themes of remembrance of the past, forgetfulness, and the impermanence of human existence. Smoky colors, drips, stains, and scratchy, worn surfaces all suggest age. He joins antique photographs framed like votives with Christian iconography and his own verses or phrases from prayers. Escobar uses these presentations of the past in order to urge its remembrance. In this way man can improve the present. Escobar’s works of remembrance are reminiscent of the abstract expressionist school of 1940’s and 1950’s New York.
