The assortment of objects found in Liye Rivera-Melo’s portrait represents the contradictions that make up who she is. As consumers and generators of culture navigating a very wired society, the artist points to the transitions and choices every young person makes to truly understand who they are.

“Each element of this image has a meaning, and everything is perfectly calculated. I am Mexican, and I am from Tijuana. I like to wear sweatshirts and also skirts. Tenis [sneakers] and heels. Stuffed animals and books. Nothing fights with the other. I consider myself a very dynamic girl, very detailed, sometimes exaggerated, sometimes weird, but always with a lot of color like my country.”
