“Where There Is Darkness, There Is Light”

When I look at this image, I see separation, but I also see the future ahead of me. The separation is see is between the black and white, but since I'm looking ahead, I see dreams and possibilities. This poem reflects how I feel about my photo.

"Invisible

But clear as day

So many words I want to say

Color paint my wind

But speak in black and white."

- Sea of Black and White Keys (2014)

My name is Vanessa Clavel and I am 17 years old. I'm believe photography can tell a story. I like to express myself in many ways, whether it be through my music and photography, or simply talking to someone and providing perspective in an authentic way. I go to a performing arts high school and it has helped me grow as an individual and feel comfortable being who I am. I am a strong individual and I believe in empowering one another. I am very independent and I believe only you can love and support yourself. I love adventure and trying new things. I'm inspired by women who respect and love themselves and how these women carry themselves.

My experience with Las Fotos Project has been amazing. I have gained knowledge, and I have seen myself grow. Taking these classes has helped me gain confidence in expressing myself through photography and I have had great interactions with beautiful young ladies. Las Fotos Project has inspired me to pursue a career in photography, which is something I never even thought of until I joined the class.
