MOLAA ZOOM PROJECT Chapter 22: With André Komatsu (Brazil)

  • Museum of Latin American Art 628 Alamitos Avenue Long Beach, CA, 90802 United States (map)

Each chapter will feature a conversation between the most remarkable artists from Latin America and Latinx in the U.S. and our MOLAA Chief Curator Gabriela Urtiaga. Together we will focus on a series or specific artwork which requires a close inspection, a deliberate process of contemplation, and exploration; delving into the ideas surrounding the creation of the works, their sources of research and inspiration, in an effort to immerse ourselves in the world of the artists.

Join Chapter # 22 of MOLAA Zoom Project, where MOLAA's Chief Curator Gabriela Urtiaga will join renowned Brazilian artist André Komatsu for a conversation.

André Komatsu (1978) was born in São Paulo and currently lives and works in the city. He is part of the generation that grew up with the resumption of democracy in Brazil and saw neoliberalism being implemented by economic policies in the 1990s. And it is in this context that his work was born. The artist questions the different ways in which man acts in the world, the way he deals with urban space and with established powers. Komatsu was awarded the Marcantonio Vilaça National Industry Award for the Visual Arts (2011); Illy Art Café, at Arco, Madrid (2011); Bolsa Pampulha, in Belo Horizonte (2005); among others, and was a finalist for the Future Generation Art Prize, Kiev, Ukraine (2012). He participated in artistic residencies at the Pampulha Art Museum, in Belo Horizonte (2005), Bronx Art Museum, in New York (2009), Matadero, in Madrid (2010), among others.

His works are part of the collections of institutions such as TATE Modern, in London; New York Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York; Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, São Paulo; Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA); and Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA) in Middlesbrough.
