MOLAA’s Day of the Dead: Strength and Hope is all about overcoming challenges, love, and emerging heroes. Together we will celebrate the past and its difficulties, while looking forward to the future. We encourage you to RSVP to the event and we will also welcome walk-ins.

Jorge R. Gutierrez Emmy and Annie award winning Jorge R. Gutierrez is a Mexican animator, painter, voice actor, writer, and director. Born in Mexico City, raised in Tijuana, CalArts graduate, Gutierrez has completed various films, cartoons, and paintings exploring his love affair with Mexican pop and folk culture. Gutierrez was the director & co-writer of the Guillermo Del Toro produced animated feature The Book of Life for Fox/Disney which earned him a 2014 Golden Globe Award nomination. He was also the writer & director of the Emmy nominated Son of Jaguar VR short for Google. Along with his wife and muse, Sandra Equihua, they created the multiple Emmy Award–winning animated series El Tigre, The Adventures of Manny Rivera for Nickelodeon. Gutierrez most recently created the event series Maya and the Three for Netflix which recently won 2 Annie Awards, including Best Children’s TV/Media award. Gutierrez is currently developing a Netflix animated feature named I, Chihuahua! with Gabriel "Fluffy" Iglesias.
The Book of Life
This animated comedy from producer Guillermo del Toro and director Jorge Gutierrez follows the journey of Manolo, a young man who embarks on an adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Rich with a fresh take on pop music favorites and featuring a unique visual style, it's a story that encourages us to celebrate the past and look forward to the future.

Ensamble de Alumnos de la Licenciatura de Música de la Facultad de Artes de la UABC: 11:15 AM
Students from the Bachelor of Arts in Music program at the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC) will perform at the Museum of Latin American Art. This ensemble is part of the Music Department at UABC where professionals are prepared for instrumental performance, music teaching and cultural management, through the study, understanding and appropriation of the various languages and musical expressions in which it develops; to enter the professional field and intervene through artistic projects in society and community with respect and openness to the multicultural.
JD Dance Company: 1:00 PM
JD Dance Company is an all-ages Ballroom, Latin, Hip Hop, Ballet Folklorico and Acro based dance company based in Long Beach, CA since 2012. We are proud to serve the greater LA County & Orange County areas to serve low-income families and provide an outlet for education, creative expression, physical and mental wellbeing and healthy social habits through dance in our local community. We are a recreational, performance and competitive organization, active year-round, and are proud to share that our young dancers are 4-time National Champions! Ballet Folklórico Aztlán de CSUN: 3:00 PM
Ballet Folklórico Aztlán (BFA) de California State University, Northridge (CSUN) was originally chartered in 1970. BFA de CSUN is a student run organization based out of the university but happily welcomes community members. The group has performed at many on campus events as well as at many community events such as at festivals, concerts and cultural events. The group performs year-round and welcomes performance requests for special events, such as weddings, baptisms, quinceañeras and other.
Danza Azteca Xochipilli: 4:00 PM
Danza Azteca Xochipilli performs the ancient traditions of the Aztec people in their colorful program combining authentic music, story and dance. This 45-minute program includes a traditional Aztec opening ceremony, the Friendship dance and a dance dedicated to Azteca Chichimec people. Students will be invited to participate onstage with the dancers and learn words in Nahuatl, the ancient Aztec language. Anecdotes and stories of the Aztec culture are told in alternating Spanish and English.
Danza Azteca Xochipilli is the combined dance and instrumental talent of one family who has preserved and performed the Aztec culture and history through stories, music and dance for over 33 years. This dance troupe shares their heritage with schools and the community Dance occupied a very special place in the Aztec culture. It had a spiritual meaning and was performed as a way to enhance one's connection with ometeotl (duality of man god and woman god) and with nature.

Children’s Sugar Skull painting workshop led by Teaching Artist Priscilla Ortiz. Ortiz founded Night Owl Studio in 2017, a non-profit organization that facilitates workshops for the community in several areas of interest including art, tech, and developmental workshops.
Printmaking workshop inspired by José Guadalupe Posada
Learn how to make prints inspired by José Guadalupe Posada! Led by Teaching Artist Juan-Carlos Perez. Perez partners with arts organizations such as Chicago Arts Partnerships in Education (CAPE), Chicago Public Schools, park districts, community centers, etc. teaching a variety of visual arts which include: rigorous arts education integration, modern arts, cultural arts, public art and mural work: painted, mosaic & bricolage.
Krista Parada, Tattoo Artist
Krista P. is a tattoo artist by trade, artist by nature, and full time mother of one. A Pomona native with a background in fine art, mostly self taught. Tattooing came naturally to me as I love learning all forms of art.

Please visit the MOLAA booth in the Viva Events Center between 11:00 AM - 1:30 PM to register. You must sign our image release form and be present in person between 1:30 PM - 2:00 PM for the live judging and announcement. If you are under 18 yrs, a parent of guardian must be present to authorize your participation. Children category: 12 years old and under; Adult category: 13 years old and up.
