Generating Radical Inclusion & Transformation
This series of conversations explores how grit, an attribute often given to people who overcome obstacles, can serve as a tool to build agency. With a specific focus on creative expression, G.R.I.T. seeks to expand what it means to practice art for social change. The title stands for: Generating Radical Inclusion & Transformation.
Hilda Gaytan leverages her academic background in sociology and urban design to promote creative expression and collective empowerment through art and culture. As President of Puente Latino Association, Ms. Gaytan works to integrate art, culture, environmental justice, and education into a cohesive strategy to foster relationships amongst neighbors. The objective is to equalize the field between generations and race as they learn to engage in art and cultural projects. Having experience with the impact that poverty and systematic oppression has on families, Ms. Gaytan seeks to provide Long Beach communities disproportionately affected by these problems, the opportunity to reimagine their shared spaces, and stimulate social and civic engagement.
