2025 Mini Ofrenda Presentation!

SUBMISSION RULES AND GUIDELINES

MOLAA invites families, artists, and community organizations to submit proposals for their mini ofrenda juried presentation! Five selected entries will be on display from October 22 through November 9 in the MOLAA lobby.

Proposals for ofrenda ideas will be accepted from the general public until Friday September 26 at 6PM. We will notify the artists if their idea is accepted by Friday October 3rd. You will then have two weeks to build your actual ofrenda and it will be installed Tuesday October 21. 

Here are the rules! 

1. The contest is limited to one ofrenda per family, artist, or organization.

2. Proposals for an ofrenda should include a short, approximately 500-1000 word description of their proposed ofrenda idea and explain what components, materials, and theme you would use.  Images or design inspiration mockups are strongly encouraged! If selected as one of the finalists, participants will build and decorate their ofrendas, include a brief description (300 words) for publication on its theme describing what or who the ofrenda is for, and list all the names of all participants in creating the altar/ofrenda. Please note: 

  • The following materials will not be permitted: burning candles 

(Unlit candles and battery-operated candles are ok but you must provide your own batteries.

  • Sound/ amplification, unwrapped foods or open drinks/containers other than water are not allowed.

  • Nails, staples, thumb tacks and tape are not allowed to be added to the walls so the ofrenda must be self-supported and be able to stand on a table or podium without additional supports. 

  • Completed Altars/Ofrendas should measure a maximum of 18 inches long by 18 inches wide and should not exceed 2ft in height (from tabletop). A podium/table and black tablecloth will be provided to display your altar. Please be mindful of assigned space limits and boundaries.

  • Ofrendas must be fully assembled and ready for display upon arrival. 

    • To respect all participating individuals, living and dead, all ofrenda components must be assembled within the dimensions listed above. 

    • All ofrenda elements must be securely attached to the base and panels. 

    • Ofrenda bases must be sturdy to ensure proper their proper handling during installation. Bases must not exceed 2ft in height. 

  • Ofrendas with loose bases or overly extended attachments or decorations may be sent back.



3. If selected, all installations will take place on October 21st and artworks be on display Wednesday October 22 beginning at 11 AM until Sunday November 9th at 6PM. All tear-down will take place on Monday, November 10 and 11 between 11 AM and 5 PM.

5. The costs of materials, transportation, set up and removal of the altar are the responsibility of participants. MOLAA is not responsible for lost or damaged work. 

6. The judges will consider the following criteria:

  • Artistic Approach (Traditional and Original Contemporary approach are both welcome).

  • Written dedication and meaning

  • Creativity and artistic design
