GABRIELA GONZÁLEZ LEAL
(Mexico, b. 1981)

Gabriela González Leal is a mixed media artist and lithographer at Piedra Negra Press in Mexico City, Mexico. Utilizing text and calligraphy she explores collective memory, the notion of play, and childhood. Fuera de juego (Offside) uses language and imagery connected to fútbol (soccer) a common recreational activity connected to notions of nationality and upward mobility. “Dreams” floats in reverse above a figure huddled on a vandalized park bench, making the viewer question the concept of the image. The illustration, which includes a figure huddled on a vandalized park bench with “Dreams” floating above, is framed by large boulders on each corner, adding a sense of oppression but also forcing the viewer to question their sense of perception. González Leal’s work has been exhibited throughout Mexico, the United States, Cuba, England, Spain, and Germany.
