These prints by Doris Salcedo are digital sketches of Shibboleth, an installation piece created at the Tate Modern in London. The installation itself was a fracture made on the floor of the hall, disrupting the room violently and forcing visitors to monitor their movement around it. The gap in the floor invites inspection, encouraging the viewer to imagine their life from the perspective of outsiders like undocumented migrants, forced to live their lives along the margins and through unofficial structures. A shibboleth is a biblical term that refers to a linguistic password and was used to determine tribal affiliation in the book of Judges. If a person pronounced shibboleth incorrectly, they were immediately identified as an outsider, captured, and killed. Salcedo meant the crack to symbolize a historical timeline that refers to modern racism and that gap particularly between white and non-white communities. The fracture was eventually sealed but remains under the floor of the hall, marking the institution with a “permanent scar,” like the historical marks left on our history by colonialism, slavery and segregation.
