Join us for a very special two-hour family art workshop of altar-making in honor of Day of the Dead. Together we will learn about the history of ofrendas and create a community altar in the MOLAA Art Studio. Pan de muerto and champurrado will be served. Please bring a photocopy of a loved one in a frame that you can plan on leaving with us. Framed photos may not be returned so please do not bring any precious items or items that you want returned.

Los Guadalupes. Una sociedad secreta en la independencia, dirigido por Busi Cortés (Duración: 46 minutos)

Documental que aborda la participación de hombres y mujeres, en su mayoría criollos, en el movimiento independentista, organizando sociedades secretas a través de las cuales apoyaron la lucha independentista. Una de estas sociedades secretas fue la llamada Los Guadalupes que funcionó de 1811 a 1814 y cuyos miembros pertenecieron a diferentes clases sociales y profesiones. Entre ellos encontramos a José María Luis Mora, Carlos María de Bustamante, Ignacio López Rayón, Andrés Quintana Roo y Leona Vicario.

Join us for an evening of fun, film, and music with “West Side Story: David Alvarez and the making of a cross-cultural musical.” This event begins at 5PM with an unveiling and short presentation on select costumes from the 2021 film, directed by Steven Spielberg. At 6PM, MOLAA’s Education department will host a Q&A with actor David Alvarez (“Bernardo”). An indoor screening of the film will start at 6:30PM and has a run time of 2 hours and 36 minutes. Rapa Nui, also known as Easter Island, is a microcosm of a planet in flux. Eating Up Easter explores the challenges faced by the Rapa Nui people, and the intergenerational fight to preserve their culture and a beloved environment against a backdrop of a modernizing society and a booming tourism trade. A Q & A with native filmmaker Sergio Rapu will follow the screening. Presented in partnership with Pacific Island Ethnic Art Museum (PIEAM)

Join MOLAA for a screening of “Carlos Almaraz - Playing with Fire” directed by Elsa Flores Almaraz and Richard Montoya. The film explores Almaraz’s internal struggles, as well as his passions, which led to him becoming one of the most beloved Los Angeles artists of his time and today.
